Shopping centre overhaul to create new office space in Leeds | 18 September 2014

The regeneration of a 50-year-old shopping complex in Leeds is set to create some much-needed office space in the city centre.

Work on the Merrion Centre will begin next year, with around 170,000 square feet of new working space set to be made available.

The overhaul project will include the refurbishment of the adjoining Merrion House building, as well as upgrades to the nearby multi-storey car park so extra vehicles can be accommodated. In total, around £30 million will be spent on the scheme, bdaily.co.uk reports.

The mall was originally the UK’s largest facility of its kind when it opened in 1964 at a cost of £2 million – the equivalent of around £30 million today.

Town Centre Securities, the firm behind the new redesign was also in charge during the initial building work. The company is headed by Edward Ziff, whose father played a big part in the early development of the complex.

Ziff told yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk: “Much of the success of the centre over the last 50 years has come from my father’s determination and tenacity.

“We are delighted that alongside our brand new tenants, a number of our key occupiers have decided to commit themselves to the long term future of the centre, that’s a real testament to my father’s legacy.”
