Sheffield service area to provide fresh retail space | 26 March 2014
Businesses are expected to bid for valuable retail and accommodation space at a new motorway service station in Sheffield.
Final plans for the facility were submitted to Sheffield City Council this week, with development company Extra MSA Group set to spend around £36 million on turning the 27-acre site into a state-of-the-art rest-stop for drivers.
In total, around 33,000 square feet of space will be made available for retail and catering businesses, with parking for 639 cars.
Extra’s chief executive officer, Andrew Long, spoke of a clear need for a new services area and said it would benefit locals. He was quoted by insidermedia.com as saying: “Our seven nationwide motorway service areas all make major contributions to their localities and have been sensitively designed to work with the surroundings and this latest project will be no exception.
“We are committed to ensuring that the first opportunities for construction related jobs will be offered to people within the region.”
According to constructionenquirer.com, the project will create around 400 jobs, with more vacancies to come from the opening of food and retail outlets, an 80-bed hotel and a petrol station.
The plans involve opening 69-hectares of private woodland and have been opposed by residents and The Woodland Trust. Extra, however, says the site is the only “commercially viable” location when highway safety regulations are considered.
