Plans announced for Sheffield city centre’s £500 million development | 22 December 2014
A group of Sheffield businesspeople have announced their intentions to develop a new city centre retail quarter.
The £500 million scheme could be finished by the end of 2018, notes thestar.co.uk, with the Sheffield Retail Development Group saying the have the expertise, financial backing and the passion to ‘transform’ the city centre.
Plans for the 650,000 square foot development include an anchor store and shops, as well as offices, a cinema, restaurants and bars. Details of the five major companies, financial backers and the members of the group, though, have not yet been released.
Spokesman John Crowther said the group has been in informal discussions with Sheffield City Council for a year. Apparently growing frustrated with the rate of progress the group decided to go public. It’s another twist in the ongoing plans for the city’s redevelopment that dates back almost 13 years.
Although light on details, including which stores had expressed an interest, Mr Crowther assures they have received expressions of interest from department stores and feels confident the scheme will attract “household” names. The group promises to have the new site finished a year ahead of the council’s timescale, reports thebusinessdesk.com.
Sheffield City Council has announced that is seeking to engage with a strategic development partner. A spokesperson said: “We welcome these proposals as we drive forward plans for Sheffield’s new retail quarter.
“We can also confirm that Sheffield City Council is now working towards the procurement process to appoint a strategic development partner, and would encourage all interested parties to engage with this process.”
