Mall landlords value ‘dusk-till-dawn’ amenities | 11 May 2012

Shopping centre landlords are increasingly seeing the value of amenities such as cinemas and restaurants in order to transform a simply shopping expedition into a ‘dusk-till-dawn experience’, according to fm-world.co.uk.

A report into leisure activities by property management firm, Cushman and Wakefield has found that introducing such facilities, which might also include casinos and fast food outlets, increases footfall and ‘dwell time’ in retail units.

Although these amenities have been used in shopping centres for some time now, it is only in the last five years that both landlords and customers have started to see their value. Consumers are now keen to combine their leisure activities so that shopping becomes more than ‘just a function’, propertyweek.com writes.

Good examples of this collaboration are recently opened malls, Liverpool One and Westfield London, both of which have incorporated cinemas in their developments. Both are hugely successful retail units with cinemas that rank within the UK’s top ten, having created an all-round leisure destination that consumers will visit repeatedly.

The report quoted research from the International Council of Shopping Centres which claimed that over half of shopping centre-cinema goers would visit shops while on their visit. It also works in reverse – many that had not planned to see a film might end a day’s shopping at the cinema.

“The importance of these anchors – restaurants, cinemas and so on – can’t be underestimated”, the report read.
