French property interesting British buyers | 9 January 2012

British buyers looking for overseas property are increasingly scouring markets across the Channel, with France coming out on top.

Property Wire reports that in the last month, France has been the most searched for location when it comes to property and a number of European locations are also seeing a rise.

Overall, 56.4 per cent of locations saw a rise in searches with Italy, Germany, Poland, Bulgaria and Switzerland coming out trumps just below France. However, Spain, Portugal, Cyprus, Greece, Turkey and Malta all saw a fall in searches claims propertymentor.co.uk – part of around 43 per cent of locations who experienced a drop.

Shameem Golamy, head of survey curators Rightmove Overseas, commented on the figures: “The big news this month is that there are more searches for French property on Rightmove than ever before. The news this year that the French government chose not to tax owners of holiday homes an extra 20 per cent seems to have finally percolated through to buyers.

“This, coupled with the start of the winter sports season appears to have driven UK buyers to browse properties in France,” he added.
