Construction industry posts sustained growth figures | 18 June 2014
The UK’s construction industry registered increases in both output and new orders in April, according to new figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
Newly published statistics show that between March and April this year, construction output rose by 1.2 per cent. Similarly, the volume of new work rose by 0.9 per cent during the same period, whilst repair and maintenance grew by 1.6 per cent.
It wasn’t on just a monthly basis that the UK’s construction industry grew, but annually as well. Since April 2013, output has grown by 4.6 per cent, whilst new work grew by 4.9 per cent and maintenance rose by 4.2 per cent.
All of this has meant the ONS can now increase the construction sector’s contribution to overall GDP. Whilst this figure was at just 0.6 per cent at the beginning of the year, strong growth figures have since seen it revised up to 1.5 per cent, khl.com notes.
A lot of this revision can be attributed to a strong March, the ONS noted, especially the positive figures recorded toward the end of the month. With April since having shown even stronger results, yet more revisions could still be on the cards.
Commenting on the findings, UK managing director at Turner & Townsend, Steve McGuckin, told building.co.uk: “With such a big upward revision to the construction sector’s contribution to GDP growth, the industry can hold its head high.
“Its power to generate jobs and broader economic progress is undimmed, and construction growth has finally spread from the South East to many other parts of the UK.”
