Businesses set to battle for prime Battersea space | 8 April 2014
Businesses across London will soon have the chance to bid for prime retail and office space next to Battersea Power Station, building.co.uk reports.
Plans for the new development were released this week by the project’s head architect, Frank Gehry, who is working with Foster & Partners. As well as a large number of residential units, 150,000 square metres of office space and 45,000 square metres of retail space will be made available.
The structures will be erected around a pedestrianized high street which has already been dubbed ‘Electric Boulevard’. More than 3,500 homes will be built, with just 103 set to be “affordable”.
The work marks Frank Gehry’s first permanent development in England. He was quoted by cityam.com as saying: “Our goal from the start has been to create a neighbourhood that connects into the historic fabric of the city of London, but one that has its own identity and integrity. We have tried to create humanistic environments that feel good to live in and visit.”
Work on the residential units began during summer 2013 and the first flats are set to go on sale next month. Once finished, the development will comprise 18 acres of open space, with leisure facilities and eateries also planned.
Architecture minister Ed Vaizey says the new project will help to put the iconic Power Station site back on the map.
