£50 million to go into improving sports facilities | 8 August 2011

With just under a year to go until the 2012 Olympic Games in London kick off, the government has pledged that £50 million will go into upgrading facilities at thousands of sports clubs around the UK.

It is hoped this investment (partially funded by the National Lottery) will galvanise interest in sport for young people.

The donation is part of one made as part of the Places People Play programme, which was announced in November last year. The scheme aims to give a total of £135 million to local sports clubs in preparation for the Olympic Games, fm-world.co.uk reports.

Sport England, which will play a part in dividing up the funding, has claimed that facilities which have not already received funding in the past are top of the list to be awarded some with this program.

“We want people all over the country to be able to look back on 2012 as the year when their local sports facilities got better, as well as the year the games came to London, ” Sport England’s chief executive, Jennie Price, told sportengland.org.

“We have worked hard to simplify the application process, with a shorter form and a catalogue of ready-made options to choose from.”
